Top 10 Winter Hen Party Destinations

Trying to plan a hen party in winter can be tricky, but don’t worry; our friends at Redstar Fancy Dress have kindly put together a comprehensive list of the best winter hen party destinations, from blissful breaks for brides on a budget to extravagant excursions for ladies who love to flash the cash.

Budget Breaks

1.  Amsterdam

Amsterdam has an undeserved reputation for being a bit busy and rowdy during the summer months, but in winter the Netherlands capital is really a beautiful sight to behold and the perfect destination for winter hen parties who are looking for a classy budget getaway.

2.  Tenerife

Tenerife’s Playa de las Americas is lucky enough to still get temperatures of up to 15C in winter, which means you’ll be able to enjoy some sunshine and even relax by the pool with a cocktail or two. This popular hen party destination is designed for low budget travellers who are looking for a package deal.

3. Zante

Greece is well known for being temperate all year round, and is a favourite destination for clubbers. So if you know your hen party will want to dance the night away then check into Laganas for a weekend of cocktails, karaoke and clubbing.   Want to do it in true hen party style?  Check out Redstar for a range of fab hen party fancy dress.

Sensible Sojourns

4. Prague

Prague is the perfect winter hen party destination for girls who like a bit of glamour. Whilst not extravagant in terms of travel and accommodation, you may want to fill your purses in preparation for the markets.

5. Rovinj

Croatia is the absolute place to be right now but the best thing about it is that, despite being uber-trendy, it’s not that expensive to visit (yet). Still, there’s not a lot of nightlife in this quaint fishing village so be prepared to shell out for bespoke group excursions.

6. Paris

Paris accommodation may be a little pricey but the cost of travel more than makes up for it. The city is stunning in winter and the ideal hen party destination for girls who want to be inspired by the romance of Europe’s love capital.

Extravagant Excursions

7. New York

New York is the ultimate winter hen party destination for ladies who love to shop, so if you’re happy to dig deep then a long weekend in the Big Apple is the perfect choice for you.

8. Thailand

It’s a long way to go, but if you’re the kind of bride-to-be who loves lying in the sun and wouldn’t mind sporting a genuine tan on her big day, Thailand is the place to be. The hours spent in the air will all be worth it once you’re ensconced in your own private beach hut.

9. Iceland

A combination of the country’s breathtaking landscape and the otherworldly Aurora Borealis makes Iceland one of the most beautiful locations in the world. It’s an unusual hen party destination, but one that you’ll never forget.

10. Bonus Holiday – the UK!

Of course we had to save the best ‘til last, so our number 10 on the list of top winter hen party destinations is good old England itself. There are so many hen party options available in the UK and often they are cheaper during the winter months. Consider clubbing in London, a weekend in the Peak District, skiing in Scotland or sailing in Cornwall – anything’s possible!  Visit Organise A Hen for ideas and inspiration for your UK hen party.

Many thanks to Sam Butterworth from Redstar Fancy Dress for the extremely useful guest blog. You can find more details on our hen party directory.

Top 5 Hen Party Cocktails

In recent years, cocktails have become the drink of choice for most Hen Parties. Cocktails offer something different, rather than the standard spirit & mixer or glass of wine, and are loved for their amazing colours, range of flavours and intriguing glassware. Hen Party organisers can search the internet and print out some cocktail recipes, then head off to the local super market to purchase the ingredients. Alternatively, organisers can hire the services of a company like Social and Cocktail Events, who will provide a mobile cocktail bar, cocktail glassware, the bartender and of course, all the ingredients to make a selection of delicious cocktails. Cocktail companies across the UK have found that Hen Parties is now the fastest growing market for companies offering bespoke cocktail packages

Below we list 5 Hen Party Cocktails that are fun, easy to make and will always prove a big success at any Hen Party.

1) French Martini

The French Martini is a fantastic looking cocktail which is easy to drink, easy to make and has rapidly become the number one choice for Hen Parties and other celebrations.

All The Vintage Things I Love… Hen Parties with Glam Hatters

All The Vintage Things I Love…

…beads…buttons…veiling…feathers…hats…cups…saucers…milk jugs…tea pots…girls… bubbly…cake…my Nan…

I’m Janie Lawson and I run The Glam Hatters Tea Parties. We host vintage fascinator making hen parties with afternoon tea. Come to us for a lovely crafternoon and come away with a gorgeous fascinator to wear to the wedding.

As you’ve probably guessed from the title I’m a vintage kind of woman from my head down to my tippy, tipsy toes. At our crafty hen parties we inspire our hens with vintage beads, buttons, millinery materials and tons and tons of feathers and veiling. We are offering readers of Organise A Hen a 10% discount on our Luxury Vintage Fascinator Making hen parties. *T&C’s apply

I’ve been running vintage inspired hat making hen parties for the last 6 years and before that I was designing vintage inspired millinery for almost 8 years, so you could say I’m a bit of an expert!!! All my art school trained, Glam Hatters teachers are also seriously into vintage. From jewellers to product designers, milliners and fashion designers, our lovely teachers will tell you all about what they love to do – just ask!

I have a lot of fun sourcing the materials for our hen parties. The vintage buttons are always a popular choice as part of a headpiece decoration. My whole family collects buttons for me and even the ladies down on the coast in Wales at my Mum’s W.I. have added to my collection. Dig deep into the vintage biscuit tins and you’ll find original 1920′s glass buttons from Paris along with lasered buttons that I discovered on a trip to New York. I have beads from all over the planet sourced during a year long world tour, some of the beads you just won’t find anywhere in Europe!

Vintage and Crafty Hen Parties with Glam Hatters Tea Parties!

Vintage and Crafty Hen Parties with Glam Hatters Tea Parties!

As well as loving the hat making side of Glam Hatters I have always had a passion for vintage china tea sets. I have been collecting china since my Nan left me her set when I was nineteen. My Nana was as tough as old boots but liked everything to be pretty, she didn’t keep her china for best and she wouldn’t drink a cup of tea unless it was in a white, bone china cup with a saucer – and she drank a lot of tea! I have collected my Vintage China for years, I’ve scoured charity shops and charmed the W.I. into letting me buy theirs! Like my Nan I never keep anything for best, if it gets broken at least it’s had a fun life. I love to see hens cooing over the china during their break for afternoon tea, and I love that everything is now mismatched as of course from time to time some of it gets smashed!

Glam Hatters bring together all the vintage things that I love… vintage style hat making, buttons, beads,  girls and  tea parties, what’s not to love?! Who could dream up a job like this?!!  I love my work and have made it my mission to bring fun, fascinators and crafty vintage afternoon teas to as many gorgeous hen parties as I possibly can.

The Glam Hatters’ vintage fascinator workshops are pure fun and a gorgeous hen party activity. Taught by my highly skilled and fabulously fun Glam Hatters’ teachers. All the workshops are suitable for any level, even if you’ve never picked up a needle in your life!

Prices start from £38

*10% discount of The Luxury Vintage Fascinator Making Workshop (minimum 8 hens, minimum number may be higher for parties outside of London – please ask).

GUEST POST: Many thanks to Janie Lawson from Glam Hatters Tea Parties for the wonderful guest blog. You can find contact details for Janie Lawson and Glam Hatters Tea Parties here.

A Few Hen Party Guest Book Ideas

We love personal hen parties! That is why we always encourage organising the hen party yourself – so you can pull together all the bride-to-be’s favourite things, before, during and after the hen weekend. Being super-organised at the hen party, will mean the ‘afterwards’ will be easy. Once you have taken out a little recovery time following the hen, the final step is to prepare a lovely keepsake for the bride-to-be (this is our Hen Planning Tip #9).

Hen Party Guestbook Ideas | copyright Organisea Ltd 2014

Hen Party Guestbook Ideas | copyright Organisea Ltd 2014

We thought we would share some of our favourite ideas for the hen party guest book:

  1. Memory book – ask all the guests to prepare and write down a memory of them with the bride-to-be, with photos and props is even better! Take photos as the memories are revealed at the hen party and incorporate all of these into a lovely book as a wedding gift from the girls.
  2. Recorded messages – in this day and age, it is so easy to get lots of short video clips. Take snippets from the hen party, together with messages from each of the hens (including any that couldn’t be there) and edit your own hen party mini-movie guest book. The bride-to-be will love this.
  3. Photo book a step by step reminder of the hen party is a great keepsake for the bride-to-be. Remember to take lots of photos during the hen and save anything that has scanning potential (such as home-made posters and quiz cards). With a little bit of effort and a good photo book website, this is something that can grace the coffee table forever (well, depending on the content, maybe the top shelf in the spare room…).
  4. Recipe Book - this is a lovely idea for a food and drink loving bride-to-be. Ask all the guests to contribute one (or more!) of their favourite recipes, whether cakes, cocktails, gourmet meals or any other delicious recipe. Be sure to take some snaps of the bride-to-be with all the guests individually so you can incorporate into a recipe book for a successful marriage.

There are so many different and fun hen party guest book ideas and you can adapt any of the above to fit the bride-to-be’s personality perfectly. Happy Hen Planning!

Personal & Unique Hen Party Fancy Dress Ideas

There is nothing quite as memorable as the addition of some appropriate fancy dress to the hen party. As with the all of the other detail (such as the games, the food and the activities) make sure the fancy dress is personal to the bride-to-be.

We have come up with some unique hen party fancy dress suggestions to help you come up with the perfect idea for the hen do:

Job: A popular choice for hen party fancy dress is matching the groom-to-be’s job or profession. Whilst this lends itself more easily to uniform professions (e.g. police, firemen, doctor) there is nothing to say a twist on ‘office chic’ won’t be just as fun. Think outside the box – does the groom-to-be have a particular penchant for pink shirts or braces? Whatever you decide, don’t forget to dress the bride-to-be up as the boss.

Favourite Colour: Ask the guests to bring items of clothing in the bride-to-be’s favourite colour. Combine with matching food and drink and you are in for a green / blue / purple / red extravaganza! This option is simple, but very effective. It makes great photos and is inexpensive for the guests.

Childhood Hobby: Dig deep on this one. Perhaps the bride-to-be was a very committed brownie or guide? Was she dedicated to her sports – a netball dab-hand, hockey captain or general all round junior athlete? School uniform is always popular to take the hen party back to school days!

Alphabet Fancy Dress: Take the first letter of the bride-to-be’s name and ask everyone to bring fancy dress beginning with that letter, e.g, for ‘Charlotte’ you could come as a cat, clown, cowgirl, chicken, cavewoman… Make sure you get a suitable outfit for the bride-to-be and see if she can guess the theme!

Bad Taste Wedding: This is great fun – have the guests scour the local charity shops and pull together the most weird and wonderful wedding outfits they can find.  A prize for the most hideous outfit is a must! The hunt can take place before the hen party, but even better, why not make it part of a hen weekend?! Of course, the bride-to-be will need to be in the bad taste wedding dress.

Whatever hen party fancy dress ideas you opt for, ensure you get some fancy dress for the bride-to-be in advance of the hen party so that you can keep it a surprise!

Happy hen planning!

3 Cheap & Cheerful Hen Party Ideas

Getting married is an expensive business. From booking a venue to buying a dress, weddings don’t come cheap. Factor in the cost of a hen party, and you could be looking at one budget-busting big day, but celebrating your final days of freedom needn’t cost a fortune. Whether you are getting married on a shoestring or simply want to save your pennies for your frock and flowers, here are three fantastically cheap and cheerful ideas to help you to see off singledom in style.

Come Dine with the Bride

If you are watching every bit of your wedding budget carefully and want a real bargain of a hen night, why not throw a dinner party? Preparing a delicious meal doesn’t have to be expensive, and cooking up a feast with your friends and family is a great way to make memories whilst also making something good to eat. Why not allocate a different course to each guest to get everyone involved, and you could even score each other’s dishes to bring a bit of friendly competition to proceedings.

Throw in a few homemade cocktails and some after-dinner entertainment of your choice (karaoke? Your favourite chick flicks?) and you have a very cheap yet very cheerful evening spent enjoying some quality time with your bridal party.

Go Glamping

That’s “glamorous camping” to the uninitiated amongst you. Find a spot you love, whether by the coast or out in the countryside, invite your bridal party and friends along, and enjoy the great outdoors with a day or two camping. Sleeping under the stars, cooking outdoors, sharing stories around an open fire – there is plenty to enjoy on a camping trip, but if you aren’t up for the classic camping experience, there are plenty of more exclusive campsites around for those who require a little touch of luxury. Whether you are looking for indulgent or basic camping, taking a weekend away with your girlfriends is a great way to mark your hen do, and if you really don’t fancy sleeping under canvas, you could always spend a little more and hire a motorhome or campervan instead.

Shop (on a budget) ‘til You Drop

You’ve probably enjoyed hundreds of shopping trips with your girlfriends, but these have probably become less frequent during the planning stages of your wedding when you’ve been counting every penny. Fear not, as you can still shop until you drop on a budget, and charity shops could be your unexpected hen do ally. Full of plenty of hidden treasures, beautiful bargains and vintage clothing and accessories, a good charity shop is an Aladdin’s cave of treats – and even if you don’t find something fab, you’re sure to have fun dressing up in some of the more interesting charity shop fashions.

A top tip is to visit an affluent area, as the items donated to charity shops in more prestigious locations tend to be of a higher quality, and you never know, you might unearth a designer bargain. And, if you want to have a hen do with a conscience, what could be better than donating to a good cause as you enjoy time with your friends?

Don’t spend a fortune on a hen party that nobody can afford to attend. Keep things cheap and cheerful and you can easily throw a hen do to remember without breaking your wedding budget.

If you fancy taking to the open road for a cheap and cheerful hen do, motorhome hire from Hire A Hymer would be perfect! That’s what Hayley Francis did for her own hen party.

5 Reasons Why London Is Hen Party Paradise

You’ve done it! You’ve got the ring on your finger, the dress is all fitted and the groom is waiting patiently at the bottom of the aisle, now all that’s left to take care of is the all-important hen party! There are of course certain staples of the hen party repertoire – male strippers, L plates, straws and toys shaped like a certain part of the male anatomy and lashings of vodka, but this isn’t for everyone. If you’re looking for something a touch more sophisticated you can pack your suitcase with a few of your favourite ladies and head to the bustling metropolis of London town.

The beauty of London is there is something for everyone. Whatever the perfect hen party means to you you’ll find it here; you just pick the theme and let London do the rest.

1. Have The Spa Experience

If you want to wake up on your wedding day feeling refreshed, relaxed and ready to start your new life then spending a day or two at a London spa should definitely be at the top of your hen party wish list. London boasts some of the most luxurious spas in the world so when you book prepare to be pampered in 5 star surroundings and feel all the planning stress of the last few months melt away.

There are literally hundreds of sumptuous spas to choose from so decide whether you’re looking for extravagance, escapism, indulgence or inspiration London has the perfect place.

2. Dining With A Difference

Going out for a meal with your nearest and dearest gets taken to a whole new level in The Big Smoke! If you’re looking for a dining experience with a difference then make one of your last meals as a single lady something to remember: dine amongst winged pooches and whimsical furniture at Les Trois Garçons in Shoreditch, in complete (and we do mean complete) darkness at Dans le Noir in Clerkenwell or in a fantastical French chateau in Beach Blanket Babylon – dinner has never been quite so thrilling.

3. Take In A Show

No visit to the capital is complete without a visit to the West End. You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to shows in London and once you’ve seen one you’ll want to see them all. Listen to the echoing anthems of Queen in We Will Rock You, be blown away by stunning costumes and dancers in The Lion King, dance along with Billy Elliot or laugh yourself silly in The Book Of Mormon, whatever show you choose one thing is certain – you’re bound to be blown away.

4. Be Tempted By The Thames

Sightseeing doesn’t have to mean packing yourself onto a cramped bus filled with other tourists and braving the city’s traffic, there is a more relaxing way to do things. By sailing across the Thames you make the city itself your dinner show; you can see stunning historic landmarks like Tower Bridge and the Houses of Parliament and you can wine and dine the whole time.

5. Champagne Above The Skyline

Make your trip complete with a glass of fizz with a view on the London Eye. The Eye promises a magical experience, your ‘flight’ takes you to the top of the city where you’ll see London like you’ve never seen it before and with the new 4D cinema added to the experience there’s no way you’ll step off feeling anything short of enchanted. You’ll experience all of the sights, smells and sounds of London before boarding your flight, there’s no better way to see the city.

Your hen party is your last hoorah as a single lady before you begin your journey into married life, make it memorable by making London your last stop before the aisle.

Manoeuvring the streets of London can be daunting for non-locals, if you’re travelling in a group do what Emma Smith does and choose Mint Coaches for fantastic and affordable London coach and minibus hire so your visit is stress free.

This is a guest post by our latest listed supplier, Mint Coaches. You can see their profile by searching the Organise A Hen directory under ‘Other’ / ‘London’. Alternatively, go direct!

How to Host a Do-It-Yourself Performing Hen Party

A do-it-yourself (“DIY”) Performing Hen party offers a great way to celebrate in style but on a shoestring. Inviting along or visiting fantastic Performing Hen party activity suppliers will always ensure the hen party goes off with a toe tapping, theatrical bang, but when you have a weekend to fill it is not always affordable to fill it completely with outside help. Likewise, a DIY hen party means you can enjoy a great variety of themes and activities. For the diva in the bride-to-be, this is where our DIY Performing Hen party ideas come in!

Performing Party Bag: In advance of the hen party, purchase a Murder Mystery board game, complete with invitations. Include the invitations for each character and a suitable prop (think cigarette holder, reading glasses, feather boa or anything else that fits) individual to each hen party guest’s character. Add a little bottle of ‘oh-be-joyful’ (spirit of your choice) and hand out the hen party bags at the start of the hen do. You may wish to give each guest a clue as to their character so they can bring along suitable fancy dress.

Performing Activities: There are many performing hen party ideas, from dancing to singing to theatrics. For this blog, we are concentrating on acting! Most of us will have played Cluedo at some point in our lives, so why not have the hen party bring it to life with the help of a Murder Mystery board game. Jazz it up a little with a karaoke machine to intersperse the investigation with some tuneful renditions of the bride-to-be’s favourite songs. A performing hen party extravaganza – just make sure someone brings a video camera to catch the hen party performance of a lifetime.

Murder Mystery Performing Hen Party!

Murder Mystery Performing Hen Party!

Performing Sustenance: To keep up the acting and the singing, the hen party will of course need sustenance in the shape of food and wine (or such other tipple as takes the bride-to-be’s fancy). A dinner party works very well with a Murder Mystery evening, but no one will want to be slaving in the kitchen and missing all the action, so order in the bride-to-be’s favourite takeaway, stock up on sparkles and you’ll be set for an afternoon / evening of sheer unadulterated, unashamed performance.

Performing Games: The Murder Mystery in itself is a great game, but you will need to include something hen party specific. ‘Mr & Mrs’ is a classic hen party game that should enter the celebrations at some stage. Have it take on a performing twist by incorporating charades, singing and acting into the question and answer stage. For example, if you have asked the groom-to-be what the bride-to-be’s favourite film is, have her act out her answer in the form of charades, with the guests guessing the bride-to-be’s answer. Then reveal whether this matches the groom-to-be’s given answer and reward / forfeit accordingly.

Happy DIY performing hen party-ing! You will find lots of helpful DIY hen party items on our Hen Kit pages under Performing Hen and elsewhere.

How to Host a Do-It-Yourself Crafty Hen Party

A do-it-yourself (“DIY”) Crafty Hen party offers a great way to celebrate in style but on a shoestring. Inviting along fantastic Crafty Hen party activity suppliers will always ensure the hen party goes off with an artistic bang, but when you have a weekend to fill it is not always affordable to fill it completely with outside help. Likewise, a DIY hen party means you can enjoy a great variety of themes and activities. For crafty loving brides-to-be, this is where our DIY Crafty Hen party suggestions come in!

Crafty Party Bags: This may depend on the crafty activity you decide upon, but based on the inspiration from this DIY hen party blog, purchase a selection of sequins, beads, piping, feathers, glitter pens and anything else that catches your eye and divide them up between the hen party bags. Giving each guest a bag on arrival will ensure they are ready for the activities ahead.

Crafty Activities: In advance of the hen party, ask each guest to bring a plain item of clothing or accessory to jazz up – this might be a pair of socks, a t-shirt, a hat, a denim skirt, some shoes or even a pair of knickers. Stock up on glue, needles and thread, scissors and sticky tape for the guests to share. Having divided up the decorative items in the hen party bags, the guests will be ready to craft! The challenge will be to see if you can pull together a delightfully ‘pimped’ outfit for the Bride-to-Be (you may wish to keep this to yourself until the hen party for maximum surprise). There is no requirement to make her wear the newly crafted outfit out, just a photo and laughs opportunity.

Pimp My Pants! | Copyright Organise A Hen 2011

Pimp My Pants! | Copyright Organise A Hen 2011

Crafty Games: Have the bride-to-be judge her favourite item of ‘pimped’ clothing, with a prize (maybe a trophy made by the bride-to-be as her Crafty Hen project?) for the winner. Prepare a small quiz for the guests, all about the bride-to-be, her soon to be husband and their relationship with forfeits for incorrect answers to break up the crafting. You will find more hen party game ideas on our website.

Crafty Food: Piping and decorating some pre-prepared cupcakes will add a lovely dimension to the Crafty Hen party. Otherwise, keep food simple. Sandwiches and other cold buffet finger food is ideal to allow the guests to pick at an appropriate time between spurts of crafty concentration.

Happy DIY Crafty Hen Party-ing! You will find lots of the items mention above on our Hen Kit pages under The Crafty Hen.
